collector’s kitchen
A kitchen designed to showcase a lifetime of mid-century finds.
Designed for a family with a deep appreciation for mid-century vintage objects, this kitchen was conceived as both a functional gathering space and a curated display for their growing collection. Classic barware, vintage electric fans, geodes, books, and trophies each carry a story, and the design challenge was to integrate these pieces seamlessly into the architecture of the room rather than treating them as afterthoughts.
The solution was a dramatic dining feature: three upholstered booths built directly into an oversized custom bookshelf. This expansive wall of display allows the family’s collection to be showcased while simultaneously creating an intimate dining environment. At its center sits a custom-designed table featuring a terrazzo slab top and welded steel base, comfortably seating twelve and anchoring the room as a true gathering place.
Entertaining was another key priority. A dedicated bar area was integrated into the kitchen with under-counter beverage refrigerators, open liquor display shelving, and generous cabinetry both above and below. The result is a highly functional entertaining hub that feels intentional and refined.
The home’s tall ceilings provided an opportunity to incorporate hidden cabinetry above both the bar and the display wall. These discreet storage areas house seasonal and infrequently used items, allowing everyday surfaces to remain beautifully curated.
The finished space is eclectic, welcoming, and highly personal. Guests are naturally drawn to the bar, the stories behind the collected objects, and the generous dining table designed to bring people together. What began as a kitchen evolved into a living gallery of the family’s passions, proving that thoughtful design can turn everyday spaces into conversation pieces.
